It seems only fitting that for the Audubon Park Garden District’s first full scale public art project, we would focus on birds. Thanks to a Mayor’s Matching Grant we received, APGD is launching phase one of its Audubon Outdoor Art Gallery. Our goal is to commission the best artists in Orlando to create murals depicting all 36 Florida birds on the endangered and threatened species lists. Each artist is free to focus on just one bird or can incorporate other birds on the list, as well.
Phase one provides enough funding to complete two traffic signal boxes, one dumpster, one large mural and three smaller murals. As additional grants and donations are acquired, more paintings will be commissioned and completed.
The Audubon Outdoor Art Gallery will bolster beauty and creativity in APGD; support and promote local artists and local business; educate the public on Florida birds and conservation; and encourage healthy living by creating reasons for people to bike and walk in the area. This project also fulfills the Community Identity benchmark in the ecodistrict protocols. It will create beautiful spaces that are accessible to all.
